The Global Postpartum Session

Pregnancy and birth are demanding on the body and mind. This is a comprehensive session to help treat the whole of the person on multiple levels after this experience and to support the major transition of postpartum. This includes uterine realignment and closing of the bones (generously shared from the Kichua tradition), moxa on the lower abdomen and other points of the body to help warm and tonify, acupuncture to support the transition of body, mind, and spirit, bodywork on some other areas that may need it. Postpartum herbs are provided to support the depletion, and to support any issues that may need addressing. Lactation counseling is included for those who want it. Also included is cranial-sacral for the infant to support their transition and to help unwind any tension from in utero constraint or the birth process itself. It is common to find some things that can be treated after even the smoothest delivery, but with complicated delivery there can be even more places that need support.

This appointment is only offered in home. After the work on the uterus it is strongly recommended to lay down for 8-9 hours. If this seems impossible, a postpartum doula can be arranged (by me if prefered) for just the day to help support this level of recovery.

Understanding the elements of the session:

Uterine realignment - in the Kichua tradition (and many other traditions in Latin America and around the world), the alignment of the uterus is felt with the hands and corrected through work with the rebozo (a tradition woven shawl/wrap) and manual therapies. This also incoprporates the Tul'ix/Arvigo Mayan abdominal work.

Closing of the Bones - In the Kichua tradition (and many other traditions in Latin America and around the world) after birth there is bodywork done to close the joints that are left open after the great opening that birth is. There is both a spiritual and physical component, but this tradition focuses on he physical closing. This complete with a hip binding to help support the work of the uterine alignment and to help hold the pelvis, which has done the most opening throughout this walk.

Moxibustion on the lower abdomen - In general, in the East Asian tradition, moxa is considered warming and tonifying. I helps to bring warmth back to the womb after the great expenditure of qi and blood that birth demands. It help support the energy of body in general. It also helps signal to the spirits of the person. Moxa is so important in this postpartum period, where there is so much depletion.

Acupuncture - To read about acupuncture in general, click here. Postpartum acupuncture can offer stability and calm to the swirling of the mind and the life of the new parent. It can also help aid the physical recovery. Acupuncture postpartum is generally gentle and supportive. The focus is on rebuilding after the birth, supporting the person in this transitional period, and of course any other concerns that may arise.

Postpartum bodywork - This can include many different things, depending on the person. Very often cranial-sacral is a great modality for this period. It can help unwind patterns in the body or emotions from the pregnancy and birth. Sometimes there are more specific physical issues that need addressing and more pointed physical modalities can be used for that.

Herbal therapies - East Asian herbal medicine is really potent and can offer really strong support postpartum. For thousands of years they have used herbs to help rebuild postpartum and to aid recovery after birth. This is a period where using raw herbs is important because of their potency and customizability. These herbal teas/soups are consumed daily for a short period to strongly build up the body.

Baby cranial-sacral - To read more about this therapy, click here. In this session we can use this for both mom and baby together to help unwind any patterns in the body or mind from the pregnancy and birth.
